It’s pear time in our backyard. They’re everywhere. I drew these two on my iPad, using Procreate, a new drawing app I really like.

Another tough night in open drawing studio
Last night was another one of those times when I just didn’t have it. Like a pitcher (I’m a big baseball fan) who just “didn’t have his stuff.” Of course, unlike the pitcher in front of thousands, I could have just walked out, but after taking a short break I made myself stick it out.… Continue reading Another tough night in open drawing studio
Best Drawing Books II
Best Drawing Books Part 2. “Human Anatomy and Figure Drawing,” by Jack N. Kramer is the best all-around digure drawing reference I own. It covers anatomy, perspective, and has great examples. It even has a sample syllabus for teaching an artistic anatomy course. My copy is falling apart, and unfortunately I think it’s out of… Continue reading Best Drawing Books II
Action Sketching
Here are a couple of 10-minute drawings from my morning sketching sessions, using an Alvin Ailey DVD, Lamy Safari ink pen, and 2 waterbrushes, one for gray and one for black. Although I like them, they’re pretty stiff and I need to find a way to get more action into them.
Things are better
I went back to basics this week and worked on drawing skills, then managed one decent watercolor at P&C last night.
My worst-ever fig. drawing sessions
My worst-ever fig. drawing sessions at P&C yest. Bad feeling of all skill gone. Dark mood. Could only slow down & keep drawing..
Alvin Ailey
I started sketcking from an Alvin Ailey DVD this morning. My usual routine is to read a section of Walt Stanchfield over breakfast, then sketch for an hour. It’s been silent comedies (Harold Lloyd, Buster Keaton–lot’s of action) for the last few months, so I thought I try some dance. Inspring; great muscle definition.
Best Drawing Books Ever, Part I
“Drawn to Life” by Walt Stanchfield. I’ve been reading a small section of this book amost every morning for almost a year, just before I sketch from old silent comedy dvds. It’s actually 2 volumes of handouts from his classes in life drawing at Disney. His main message is get the gesture. Here’s a sample… Continue reading Best Drawing Books Ever, Part I
Summer Life Drawing
For the second summer now, I’ve drawn from the model for three weeks at MATC with Bob Schultz. It’s great to spend entire days with other artists doing art (plus gossip, political discussion, and lunch). Here are some heightened drawings (instead of just charcoal on white paper, these are done with both charcoal and white… Continue reading Summer Life Drawing
New Life Drawings
Two new life drawings from Bob Schultz’s class on Thursdays. I’m really working on shadows–trying to find the core of the shadow and put reflected light back into the shadows. Each drawing is done with charcoal pencils on 18×24-inch newsprint and took about 2 1/2 hours.
