Painted with Plein Air Painters of Chicago again last Saturday at Randolph and Halsted. Really nice group; they even brought donuts and coffee. This is me channeling Sloan and Hopper.

First Plein Air in Five Years!
I went out to paint with the Plein Air Painters of Chicago last Saturday in Pilsen. Here’s the result. I’m happy with it. A great group of really nice people who were very welcoming. The weather was perfect.
Beyond iPad
The difficulties of iPad sketching were getting in the way, so I've gone back to traditional media. This is last Friday open drawing at the Palette and Chisel. A half-hour pose which I first sketched in pencil then painted in gouache and finished up with ballpoint pen. I was really inspired by a great… Continue reading Beyond iPad
What I’m Learning
After my last post about Steve Huston's New Masters Academy videos, I thought I'd better post some of my drawings showing what I've gotten out of practicing along with Steve. This is a sheet of 5–10 minute drawings (on the video they're 1–2 minute poses, but I still have to slow down the playback to… Continue reading What I’m Learning
Steve Huston Quicksketch Videos
Steve Huston and the New Masters Academy have a lot of really useful videos on Youtube. This is a screen shot of two videos placed side-by-side. On the left is a video of Steve doing a 5-minute sketch of a pose shown in the video on the right, which is a sequence of timed poses.… Continue reading Steve Huston Quicksketch Videos
More iPad Quick Sketch
About a half-hour quick sketch from an online Croquis Cafe pose by Rhus. I've been reading about photoshop painting techniques and for this I used layers for the background texture and to make adjustments to the skin color. Plus I used the alpha lock feature in Procreate to lighten the color of the original line… Continue reading More iPad Quick Sketch
Half Hour iPad Quick Sketch
In Procreate with “post-production” glazing for texture, from an on-line Croquis Cafe video. It's really hard to draw decent curves, among other things. The model has a real Picasso-esque face. Posted with Blogsy
Pushing Electrons Around
Latest iPad quick sketch. Procreate custom brushes. Thirty minutes. Done after watching a Steve Huston video on shading. Posted with Blogsy
Struggles with ipad quick sketch
A little more than a month of weekly quick sketch sessions plus practice at home has yielded the top sketch, a half-hour one, and bottom, a more typical 5-minute sketch. I'm using a Procreate brush that changes width with speed so I can get a nice fine line if I use quick strokes, but the… Continue reading Struggles with ipad quick sketch
iPad Quicksketch
I'm stubbornly continuing to use my ipad for quick sketch sessions with a model. Mainly because it keeps me focused on gesture and doesn't let me start finished some small part of the drawing before getting the whole thing down–something I'm way too likely to do. Most of my time on this sketch was spent… Continue reading iPad Quicksketch
