Yesterday, I painted the orange, brass bowl, added green to the apple shadow and massed in the grapes in very dark blue. The big yellow section behind the bowl will have to get some work soon, although I’m not sure how to do a complicated drape pattern. I also got a new camera, so hopefully… Continue reading New Still Life, Part III

New Still Life, Part II
I had a great class last night. As often happens, last week was terrible–I painted the background on the left of the picture a color that was too close to the color used in the bottle and therefore too warm, making the background not recede enough. Then I painted it over with a cooler color,… Continue reading New Still Life, Part II
The Next Still Life
Last Tuesday I started a new still life. Having no ideas, and since Michael had offered to provide set-up items, I took him up on his offer. Here’s the result. Just a little more complicated than I would have had the courage for, but I’m glad he has that much confidence in me. I had… Continue reading The Next Still Life
The Still Life Is Done
Here’s the completed painting. It’s 11×14 inches, oil on double-primed Belgian linen canvas. It looks great in its narrow gold frame on my dining room wall. Finishing the picture ended my 10-week still life class at the Palette and Chisel. But tomorrow I’ll start another 8-week session of the same class. Classes at the P&C… Continue reading The Still Life Is Done
A Work in Progress
Here’s a painting I’m working on in still life class. I’ve worked on it for three sessions now. First I put in just the shadows, then added some color to the peach and added the background, and yesterday I added the highlight side of the vase and the darker part of the shadow running down… Continue reading A Work in Progress
The School Bell Rang
I was back in class yesterday up in the 3d floor loft studio at the Palette & Chisel, painting a pear in 5 grayscale values. It was my first class with Michael Van Zeyl, highly-recommended still-life painting teacher at the academy. After working on my drawing skills for the past year and half, it’s time… Continue reading The School Bell Rang
Chicago Commission
This is a commission I did for a friend whose daughter lives in Chicago near Wrigley Field. I took pictures of the house on the first nice day last April, before everything had grown out. I would have done an oil sketch on the spot, but this was a surprise Christmas gift and I heard… Continue reading Chicago Commission
Show a Success
The October show at EVP was great. A lot of friends came to the opening. I’m very grateful to those who bought pictures. Here are a couple of the pictures that are still available. Write me if you’re interested.
Metra South
Here’s a picture I put in the Urban Painting Show at the Palette and Chisel that’s going on this weekend. It’s 11×14 inches and was painted in the studio from a small sketch I did late last fall outdoors on the platform of the Metra South Station. I used my camera phone to capture the… Continue reading Metra South
Bringing things up to date
It’s been a long but fruitful year of life drawing at the Palette and Chisel. I felt it was time to go back to basics and really learn how to draw. And I can already see that it’s made a difference in my paintings. I’ve found that I really enjoy drawing. Once I get going,… Continue reading Bringing things up to date
